Stop #4:
(Rage) Comics & Recursion

A Family Tree

Here we go again! This pit stop will stop at a similar idea as the previous stop. This time, I invite you to examine with me the the consistence and persistence of particular faces in rage comic memes and the interaction of this repetition with gender.

While this exploration brings up interesting questions about from whom these visuals originate and these creators’ own gender/identity, it also provides an example of the role of repetition of images in memes. Because they do not simply repeat but have small but meaningful changes added upon their repetition, I find

recursion

to be a fitting term.

TEMPLATE

As the following trees will confirm, this diagram provides a generic overview of the recursion of face memes. The recursion is notably based on a male foundation, with female versions as added alternatives.

SUPER-GENERATION 1.0
Mid-2000’s to early 2010s

This first group has a far simpler tree than the following group, likely in part due to more rudimentary technology. Still, the recursion of the “Base Faces” is clear.

SUPER GENERATION 2.0:
Late 2010S-Now

This page is a taste of a larger research project that I have had in mind for a few years that explores gender, creators, users, value and semiotics.
